Kate Middleton gets along well with the royal family compared to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana for a number of reasons.

The Duchess of Cambridge has a better relationship with the royals compared to the Princess of Wales. According to many, this has something to do with the two women’s maturity when they married, their relationship to their royal husbands and the way they handle the press.

Margaret Challen, who studied at the University of British Columbia, shared her thoughts about the matter in this forum. According to her, Princess Diana was just 19 when she married Prince Charles while Middleton was already 29 when she tied the knot with Prince William. Between the two, Middleton had a “more realistic idea” about marrying a royal.

Also, unlike the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pretty close in age. Margaret Smith added that Middleton and Prince William have the same level of education and they dated for years before they walked down the aisle unlike Prince Charles and Princess Diana who had a whirlwind romance.

Prince William and Middleton’s relationship is also far better than Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had been dating on and off for eight years and lived together before they finally decided that they wanted to be together for the rest of their lives.

Prince William saw his parents’ rocky marriage. He took his time before he popped the big question to Middleton and refused to be pressured in rushing his marriage. In fact, he was adamant about marrying Middleton because he didn’t want his own marriage to end up like how Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s did.

For Gina Seldarius, a part-time watcher of the royals, Middleton’s “most important advantage to Diana is her discretion.” She stressed that the royal family doesn’t like any member who sells private conversation to the press, clearly referencing Princess Diana’s infamous “Panorama” interview. Middleton kept her mouth shut when she was interviewed following her brief split from Prince William.

Royal correspondent Camilla Tominey also praised that particular attitude of Middleton. Tominey said that she called Middleton following her breakup with the future king and the duchess declined to comment.

“I’ve never commented to the press before and I don’t think it would be wise to start now,” Middleton told her.

Tominey has advised Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, to do the same as Middleton because Queen Elizabeth II’s mantra is “never complain and never explain.”
