Prince Charles once advised Meghan Markle against wearing a tiara.

According to Daily Mail’s royal correspondent Charlotte Wace, there was a time when the Prince of Wales didn’t approve of Markle’s plan to wear a tiara. Prince Charles told Markle not to wear one during her first overseas state dinner in Fiji last October.

Initially, the Duchess of Sussex was planning to borrow a jeweled tiara from the Royal Collection for the event. However, Prince Harry’s father advised against it because such “ostentation” is avoided in parts of the Commonwealth where it can be seen as “extravagant.”

The UN estimates that the average monthly wage in Fiji is just $521, and Prince Charles thought that Markle wearing a tiara would “not be in keeping with modern monarchy.”

A source said that Markle didn’t really understand all of it as she was still new to her role. Prince Charles' advice wasn’t offensive because the future king only had good intentions when guiding his daughter-in-law.

Prince Charles has traveled to those places many times, and he is “very well placed to give advice on such matters.” Also, “it was very kindly done.”

Although Markle didn’t wear a tiara for the event, she donned a pair of diamond earrings that were thought to have been borrowed from the Queen’s collection. The duchess looked regal in her full-length gown by Safiyaa.

On the same night, Markle’s sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, dazzled in her favorite Lover’s Knot tiara. While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended a state dinner, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stepped out for a state banquet at Buckingham Palace with King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and Queen Maxima.

Middleton was the picture of class and elegance in her blue Alexander McQueen gown that flattered her trim figure. The dress features thick straps and a figure-hugging bodice.

Aside from wearing Princess Diana’s Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, the duchess accessorized with a pair of teardrop pearl earrings and a diamond and pearl necklace, which was owned by the Queen Mother. It was the third time Middleton had worn the glamorous headpiece.
