Wonder Woman is about to face her most famous archnemesis yet again when she returns to the big screens this summer.

Avid DC Universe fans are already aware of the Amazonian superhero’s formidable adversary, archaeologist and heiress Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva, better known for her alter ego the “Cheetah.” The animalistic supervillain will be enlivened by actress and comedian Kristen Wiig in “Wonder Woman 1984” the film’s highly anticipated sequel slated for release late summer.

And though it has since been confirmed that Wiig’s portrayal of the notorious antagonist will make its kickoff in the DC film franchise, the production’s trailer and media releases haven’t exactly been candid about the character’s role. Then on May 4 (Monday), Warner Bros. revealed two new images of “Wonder Woman 1984” showcasing Wiig as the notorious Cheetah fighting off Gal Gadot’s Wonder woman for the first time.

As per People, one of the film’s new photos featured Wiig’s Cheetah fighting off Wonder woman’s (Gadot) Lasso of Truth with the battle seemingly taking place in the White House in Washington D.C. —a notable setting made apparent in the movie’s first trailer released last December 2019. The two opponents are situated adjacent to each other in combat, framed by stone-white pillars with a red carpet sprawled across the hall. The American flag and government seal are also evident in the photo.

Meanwhile, the other image showed Pedro Pascal portraying comic character Maxwell Lord, Justice League’s powerful business magnate, known for his ability to control other people’s minds. In the photo, Pascal’s Maxwell Lord is tied up by Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth and is positioned between two men who seem like the character’s hired guns.

Amid teasers and trailers, the real score behind the sequel’s plot seems to be kept obscured showing only surface-level snippets of how the movie will come about. Yet the Warner Bros.’ film trailer still captured some pretty eminent storylines such as the unexpected reunion of Gadot’s Diana and Chris Pine’s character Steve Trevor who was apparently killed when he sacrificed himself to help wonder woman save the world.

Wiig’s villainous character though remains concealed and only appears in the ’80s themed trailer clip as her professional archaeologist counterpart, Dr. Minerva.

“Wonder Woman 1984” was originally scheduled for cinematic release on June 5. Yet due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the film joins the winding line of delayed releases and has also been pushed for a later date. Warner Bros. Pictures’ chairman Toby Emmerich stated that the production has called off the slated debut and set the film to hit theaters on Aug. 14 instead.

“When we greenlit ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14,” Emmerich said on a statement with Variety. “We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then.”
