A young girl died on Thursday morning when a house in Edmond, Oklahoma, exploded. She was in her family’s suburban home, located in the Oklahoma City metro area, with her parents and a sibling.

“This was a fairly large house that exploded, and we don’t know the cause for sure at this point. There were four people, a family; a mom, a dad, and two children. One of the children did not survive and the other three were transported,” Chief Benny Fulkerson of the Oklahoma City Fire Department told local outlet KFOR.

The juvenile female’s surviving family members were taken to the hospital. Her father is considered to be in serious condition while her mother and brother both have burn injuries.

Firefighters from both Oklahoma City and Edmond responded to the explosion shortly before 7 a.m. The blast could apparently be heard from 30 miles away and damaged three nearby homes. The house was located in the 8000 block Northeast 139th Street, near East Memorial Road and Midwest Boulevard.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission revealed propane as the cause of the explosion, ABC affiliate KOCO reports. Oklahoma’s LPG Gas Administration regulates the propane in that area.

Neighbors told the local news that it felt like an earthquake when the explosion happened. One neighbor also told News 9 that the father said he was making coffee when the explosion suddenly happened.

The incident is believed to be accidental.
