KEY POINTS

  • Zack Snyder made "Justice League" with a sequel in mind so his film "ends in a massive cliffhanger"
  • "Justice League 2" is unlikely to happen due to the lack of interest from Warner Bros., according to Snyder
  • The director said Darkseid would be the villain in the sequel

Zack Snyder's original cut of "Justice League" will be four hours long and is meant to have a sequel, but fans likely won't get to see the next installment.

With the Snyder Cut nearing its release, the director revealed during the IGN Fan Fest 2021 Saturday that it "ends in a massive cliffhanger" despite its long running time. The original "Justice League" movie's ending sets up a direct sequel.

However, Snyder said that he doesn't think a sequel will happen due to the lack of interest from Warner Bros.

"Well, it was meant to be two more movies," he told IGN Fan Fest. "It hints, as you would, at a potential other world."

"I'd plant the seeds as I had wanted to of what would come in the later films," he explained. "That's in there, but as far as those stories that would be to come -- if ever that happened, which it does not look like it would -- but I think it's easy to speculate based on that and we can talk about that for quite a while."

During the conversation, he reiterated that the movie was designed to have a sequel. "It is a cliffhanger … The movie ends in a massive cliffhanger, yeah," he said.

Snyder also confirmed that Darkseid would have been the sequel's villain. "[Darkseid was] certainly the sequel bad guy, but he definitely is in full effect [in The Snyder Cut]. He's running the show. He's there. I don't want to, again, spoil it but, yeah, he's definitely there," he explained.

The director hinted that "Justice League 2" would be set in the post-apocalyptic world that Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne/Batman saw in a premonition.

Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds recently shot down rumors that his Green Lantern will make an appearance in the upcoming Snyder Cut. The speculations stemmed from a Vanity Fair report that said Snyder's reshot ending will feature a "hero cameo that will blow hard-core fans’ minds."

Responding to voice actor Jon Bailey's tweet suggesting that Reynolds' Green Lantern is the surprise element in the film, he wrote: "It’s not me. But what a cool pirate flag to cameo as Hal. Maybe it’s another GL? But for me, the suit stays in the closet. I mean, computer."

"Zack Snyder’s Justice League" premieres on HBO Max on March 18. It stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons and Diane Lane, among others.
