With facts about Apple’s much-anticipated iPhone 8 scarce, rumors abound prior to its expected fall release — so many that it’s hard to keep up.

It seems like every day there is new information about the iPhone 8, and Apple has hinted it’s not so happy about that. CEO Tim Cook recently blamed the “pause” in purchases of its current iPhone models on rumors about possible iPhone 8 features during his second-quarter 2017 earnings call this week.

If you’re looking to buy the iPhone 8 this fall, here’s an overview of the device’s rumored features, release date and possible delay.

iPhone 8 Rumored Features

Display

The upcoming iPhone 8, which could also be called the iPhone X, iPhone Pro or iPhone Edition, reportedly will come with an OLED edge-to-edge display. Apple was said to have placed orders for OLED panels from Samsung for its upcoming model. The company also reportedly signed a two-year deal worth $9 billion with Samsung for OLED panels. The iPhone 8 is rumored to be released with the iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus, which are expected to come with LCD displays.

iPhone 8 Smart Connector: AR and VR, Wireless Charging

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested earlier this year Apple’s 2017 iPhone lineup will feature wireless charging. Another report said the iPhone 8 will come with a wireless charging feature through Apple’s Smart Connector, which is used on the iPad Pro. The Smart Connector could also support augmented reality and virtual reality accessories, the Verifier reported. In February, it was revealed Apple had 1,000 engineers working on a project in Israel that could be related to AR.

Embedded Touch ID

Apple reportedly will embed the iPhone 8’s Touch ID into the screen display. However, an analyst from Cowen and Co. said last month the embedded Touch ID feature was the one causing Apple the most trouble. If Apple can’t embed the Touch ID into the front screen, it might ditch the idea completely and focus on face recognition. Apple could also move the Touch ID to the back of the screen, or delay the production of the 10th anniversary iPhone, the analyst said.

3D-Sensing Camera

In February Kuo, suggested the iPhone 8 could have a 3D-sensing front camera. Other reports have suggested Himax Technologies will supply 3D sensors for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8. Another report said Himax will supply components for Apple, adding that optical and photonic products manufacturer Lumentum will supply parts as well.

Enhanced Siri

Rumors suggest Apple’s next iPhone lineup will feature an improved version of Siri. A report in January said Apple was looking into revamping Siri to compete with other digital assistants, including the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Apple also reportedly will boost Siri with contextual learning abilities and deep integration with iMessage and iCloud in its upcoming iOS 11 update.

Vertical Dual Camera

A Bloomberg report last month said Apple was testing more advanced cameras for the iPhone 8. The company reportedly will position the dual-camera system on the back of the device vertically instead of horizontally, unlike the iPhone 7 Plus. Apple was said to be testing dual-lenses for the front camera, an upgrade from last year’s models.

iPhone 8 Leaks
A picture of what is supposed to be a case for the iPhone 8 was leaked on Twitter at the end of April. The case shows a section for a vertical dual-camera. It also shows a longer power button on the bottom of the device, compared to the current smaller lightning port. Around the same time, a schematic of the iPhone 8 was also leaked. The schematic showed a spot for a vertical dual-camera and a circular hole underneath the logo, which could suggest a Touch ID placed on the back of the iPhone.

iPhone 8 Release Date, Pre-Orders, Price

The iPhone 8 is expected to launch in September, as Apple usually does. However, Kuo said the 10th anniversary iPhone could face "severe supply shortages" when it releases. Meanwhile, analyst Brian White previously said Apple will introduce the iPhone 8 and take preorders in September, but deliveries might not start until “several weeks later.”

The iPhone 8 is rumored to have a price tag exceeding $1,000.

iPhone 8 Delay Rumors

Although some reports point to a September release of the iPhone 8, others suggest the launch could be delayed. Some rumors point to a delayed release date because of key components for the 3D-sensing camera. Another report said the iPhone 8 could be delayed until late October or November, pointing to trouble with Apple’s OLED display order. Another reason for Apple’s delay is that the company and its suppliers are working to patch up overheating problems with wireless charging components.
