Three teenagers were found dead in a Texas home in what police suspect was a double murder-suicide.

"We're proceeding as if it's most likely, at first glance, to be a double murder and suicide," Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told NBC News.

The incident came to light after a family member of one of the teens, who lived next door, found the bodies of two girls and a boy inside a residence in Crosby, northeast of Houston, police said.

The teens had signs of trauma on their bodies, said Gonzalez. A firearm, thought to be connected to the incident, was recovered from the residence.

Investigators found two bodies lying together and the third at a different location. The boy is thought to be aged 15 and the two girls were 17 years old.

The identities of the teens have not been revealed. Police believe two of the teens were related and the third was their acquaintance.

According to the police, the owner of the home was away on travel at the time of the incident.

"It's really surprising to see something like this happen out here to one of us. Out here it's a close community for the most part. We all watch out for each other," David Givans, who lives near the house where the bodies were discovered, said to KHOU.

County Sheriff Gonzalez called the events tragic but added that the public is under no threat. "Our condolences go out to all the family members," he said at a press conference.

Police are investigating the case and looking for a motive.

Last week, a Florida woman allegedly killed her two children before turning the gun on herself following an argument with her husband. The man discovered the body upon returning to the house and called the police.
