As "48 Hours" wraps up Season 32, many true crime fans may already be looking forward to the CBS show's return in the fall after it was officially announced that the series had been renewed. However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic may have made some wonder whether or not Season 33 will face any type of delay. Now, a new report has indicated what the future may hold for new episodes of the investigative show.

According to the Philadelphia Tribune, CBS has indicated that they are optimistic about bringing the show back later this year. This comes after CBS announced in a press release on Tuesday that "48 Hours" is on the schedule for primetime Saturday air dates in 2020-2021.

"CBS said it plans a fall schedule that's a close match to last season, but the network is keeping a watchful eye on when the industry will emerge from its virus-caused production shutdown," stated the publication.

Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment, then elaborated on this point.

"We are optimistic we're going to have our shows on in the fall. ...That might not mean all our shows, or 90 percent, premiere Sept. 21," Kahl said. She then added that the network hopes that the current schedule stays intact.

Throughout Season 32 of the true-crime show, hosts Erin Moriarty, Peter Van Sant, Maureen Maher, and others have examined a variety of stories. Lori Vallow's case, Crosley Green's murder conviction, and Ezra McCandless' murder trial were all explored in recent episodes.

Additionally, Ted Bundy's survivors also revealed new details about the 1978 attack at the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University in Tallahassee. During the episode, Kathy Kleiner and Karen Chandler shared what happened when they encountered the serial killer. The episode also revealed that Bundy had simply "walked in through an unlocked door" on the night of the attack.

The return of "48 Hours" is set to be accompanied by other popular shows, including "Survivor," "60 Minutes," "Blue Bloods," and more.
