It’s officially just about one year since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle officially wed and became the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. However, life since May 19, 2018, has not been easy for the royal couple, as they’ve been plagued with endless drama and rumors almost since the minute they were introduced to the world as husband and wife.

From stories claiming they were already headed for a divorce, to endless reports of feuds with both of their families and even claims that their pregnancy wasn’t what it seemed, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been the subjects of a very eventful year. Here are the 5 biggest rumors they have faced since they married.

Divorce:

It didn’t take long for reports to surface which claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s marriage was already in trouble. In fact, just one month after the pair said “I Do,” The National Enquirer was claiming that the couple’s marriage was “on the rocks” after a “blistering fight.”

The story claimed that Markle was already pregnant and expecting twins, and that she demanded that they cancel their Fall Tour due to the threat of Zika Virus, which is dangerous for pregnant women, and as a result, Harry became livid with his wife for trying to back out of a royal commitment, and things escalated to a point where he walked out while ripping off his wedding ring and shouting “I don’t know why I married you!”

Naturally, the report was proven false, as the couple is still very much together and has continued to prove their marriage is strong. Of course, that still hasn’t stopped reports claiming the pair has problems, with rumors surfacing again in March that Markle’s political views were making her husband miserable, and photos proved he wasn’t as happy when she was around.

Marriage Conspiracy Theory

In addition to early rumors suggesting they could be headed for divorce, Prince Harry and Meghan were also the subjects of a wild conspiracy theory which claimed that he only married the American former actress for one reason—to help pave the way for Great Britain to eventually colonize the U.S. once again through his children with Markle, who would be granted American citizenship even if they were born abroad because their mother was an American citizen. Since the pair are likely to not leave the UK for the US to establish permanent residency there, it still remains highly unlikely to be true, however.

Family Feud

Sadly, rumors of feuds had nothing to do with a game show when it came to Harry and Meghan’s first year of marriage. Unfortunately, rifts were reported as being rampant within the senior royals, and Markle was believed to have been the reason for all of it.

The stories started shortly after it was announced that Harry and Meghan would be splitting up from Prince William and Kate Middleton as each pair focused on different royal duties and that the newly-married couple would actually be leaving their residence at Kensington Palace for Frogmore Cottage in Windsor. Rumors quickly surfaced that claimed the split was the result of a feud struck up between Meghan and Kate before the wedding, where Markle made her future sister-in-law cry during one of Princess Charlotte’s dress fittings. Reports then circulated that the battle wasn’t between the Duchesses at all, and in fact, their husbands were at war because Prince Harry felt his brother didn’t properly welcome his wife into the family.

Sadly, though they’ve tried to put the feud rumors to rest through public appearances and pleasant interviews where they have nothing but nice things to say about one another, these rumors still remain persistent as everything the royal couples do is scrutinized.

William and Kate weren’t the only ones who Markle allegedly feuded with though, as the Duchess was reportedly responsible for causing Queen Elizabeth some ill health over the holidays due to her behavior. Again though, that report was proven false, mainly because it was alleged that the event happened as the family gathered at Sandringham for their Christmas events. However, the report was published on Dec. 19, and the Queen herself didn’t even head to her estate until one day later.

Saying Goodbye To Royal Life

Another persistent rumor surrounding the pair has been that they are considering ditching life with the royal family for good. The pair were encouraged to actually do so earlier this year in an opinion piece because it would help “radically change” the monarchy, and since then, there have been reports they would consider retiring and moving to California to allow their children to have normal lives, as well as ones claiming they were going to move to Africa for a few years—and that it was Kate Middleton’s suggestion that they leave.

Pregnancy Uproar

After intense speculation on when they would announce they were having a baby, Harry and Meghan finally confirmed the news in October, revealing they were expecting their first child together and that they would welcome him/her in the spring. Sadly, even this happy time for the couple was marred by controversy.

Markle was accused of faking her pregnancy due to the way her bump later looked in several different outfits. In some cases, it seemed smaller, while at other times it appeared to be larger, and the lack of consistency led to some theorizing she was wearing a fake belly. Even video surfacing that showed her reacting to a visible kick from the baby didn’t quell those rumors, and there are still some who likely believe a surrogate actually delivered Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

Of course, even those who believed Markle was actually pregnant found something to complain about as well, with some expressing outrage when it came out that Markle was not going to do a photocall after the birth, and would instead wait a couple of days before introducing her son to the world. This was met with criticism as some felt that they owed it to the public to reveal their baby shortly after his birth.
