A young boy accidentally shot himself with his father's licensed gun while playing with it at their home in Manhattan, New York City borough, Wednesday night.

According to police, the eight-year-old boy had accidentally shot himself in the hand at around 8 p.m. at the family home, which was located on Broadway in Inwood, Manhattan.

Authorities stated the gun found in the victim's possession was licensed as the child's father worked as a private investigator.

Following the incident, the child was taken to New York-Presbyterian Medical Center where he received treatment for his injuries. The identity of the eight-year-old was not revealed by the police, and so far, no arrests have been made. It was also not clear if any charges were filed against the parents.

In a similar incident that took place in March, a three-year-old toddler had accidentally shot himself with an unsecured handgun at his home in Glendale, Arizona. Police stated the boy shot himself after he managed to get his hands on the weapon which belonged to his parents.

According to investigators, the parents of the child were present at the house when the incident took place. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with an injured finger. Later, the police stated the injuries were non-life threatening. The incident was being investigated by the Crimes Against Children detectives.
