Netflix released many films on its streaming service in 2019, but one ended up being the most popular movie. The streaming giant’s original film “Murder Mystery” earned the top spot as the most-watched movie on the platform this year.

According to Reuters, the Adam Sandler film topped the list of the streaming service's most popular releases in 2019 in the U.S. The comedy starred the comedian and Jennifer Aniston as married tourists who get involved in a murder plot on board a yacht. After it’s release in June, Netflix reported having reached almost 30.9 million accounts viewing the movie in its first three days. “Murder Mystery” also earned the title of the biggest opening weekend ever for a Netflix movie.

The ranking was based on the number of households watching at least two minutes of a TV show, film, or special within the first 28 days that it gets released. The list also included original Netflix films like “The Irishman” and “6 Underground” and popular Netflix shows like the third season of “Stranger Things” and its new fantasy series “The Witcher.”

Here’s the list of popular movies that made it to the list from The Hollywood Reporter:

With more than 158 subscribers around the world, Netflix doesn’t usually release its viewership numbers. Their 2019 list was delivered by Netflix instead of a third party so the platform could get an idea of what titles performed well on their service. Apparently, executives of the streaming service are looking to utilize their audience numbers more in the future to appease Hollywood and to help viewers decide what is worth watching.
