"There is a reason we have never gone back to the moon," says the official Apollo 18 Web site.

Directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego and produced by Timur Bekmambetov, Apollo 18 is the upcoming horror flick that is scheduled for release on Sep. 2, 2011.

The movie centers on a secret manned mission to the moon that was funded by the US Department of Defense. Launched in December 1974, the Apollo 18 mission was launched after the 1972 Apollo 17 mission that supposedly never returned. Officially, the US government and NASA denies the existence of the Apollo 18 mission and maintains that Apollo 17 was the last manned mission to the moon.

The film revolves around a fictional hypothesis of this secret mission to signify the real reason as to why the United States never initiated another expedition to the moon. Shot in a footage style, the plot indicates a government coverup of the mission following the discovery and attack of the crew members by parasitic lifeforms on the moon.

The official trailer shows an American astronaut finding a dead cosmonaut on the moon surface.
