One of the most enigmatic characters in Season 1 of “The Arrangement” is Courtney Paige’s Annika. But unfortunately for viewers who have been looking forward to the character’s return, Annika didn’t appear in finale. But will the aspiring writer return in Season 2 of the E! series?

In a recent interview with Hidden Remote, Paige was tight-lipped on whether or not she will be reprising her role in the sophomore run of the Jonathan Abrahams-created show. But if she ends up returning to the series, Paige said that she’s hoping that she will get to play other aspects of Annika.

“Annika is quite the onion,” Paige said of her character. “I think she has a lot of layers and I think the audience has only seen the surface layer. I think she was really manipulated into everything that has happened so far. She is throwing herself in these situations that she thinks will help her in the long run, but in reality they are hurting her. Essentially, Annika is the villain, but if she is in Season 2, hopefully people will get to see another side of her. She has all of the qualities I mention that make me love her.”

Annika was first introduced in the series premiere as the other lover of Megan’s (Christine Evangelista) ex-boyfriend, Nic (Matthew Kevin Anderson). Annika was later revealed to be an aspiring writer who’s willing to do anything just to reach her dream. Annika joined the Institute for the Higher Mind to get closer to film producer Deann (Lexa Doig), who eventually had a dalliance with her.

Deann abruptly ended their casual sexual relationship in Season 1, episode 8, in which Deann bought the rights to her “Technicolor Highway” script for $100,000. But as part of the deal, she isn’t allowed to go anywhere near the film’s production, and she and Deann have to part ways. But before bidding farewell to one another, Deann baptized Annika with a pen name, giving her the opportunity to continue her writing career in Hollywood.

“[You may be gone as Anika] but Ann Toren can walk into any studio with this credit and her next great idea, and get a deal,” Deann told Annika in their last scene together in the freshman run of “The Arrangement.” “It’s called the nom de plume, and it’s your chance to have something real in this business. You should grab it.”

Although Doig admitted to TVLine that she doesn’t quite get Annika and Deann’s relationship, it won’t be surprising if Annika appears at some point next season because “Technicolor Highway” is scheduled as Megan and Kyle’s next big movie project.

In the series premiere, Annika showed up in front of Megan’s apartment claiming that she’s pregnant with Nic’s baby. And since it has never been confirmed whether or not she’s indeed expecting a baby, perhaps her potential return in Season 2 will explain how her relationship with Nic started.

“I think when you find out you will be completely blown away but you are going to have to continue tuning in to find out because unfortunately they have a lot of secrets to reveal,” Paige told Hidden Remote when asked why Annika was outside’s Megan house in Season 1, episode 1. “Maybe tweet at Jonathan Abrams (@Jsneaky8) and he will let a little secret slip for everyone because he might get a little cranky at me if I let those secrets out.”
