“Arrow” Season 7 will kick off in a dark place. Despite not catching Diaz, Oliver had to fulfill his end of the deal and go to prison. He’ll be behind bars with the criminals he took down as the Green Arrow, and with his identity exposed, he’ll be in trouble.

Director and stunt coordinator James Bamford hinted that the Slabside Supermax Prison arc could be the show’s darkest moment yet. “I can’t say exactly who or what’s in there, but it’s a pretty dark, horrible, evil place,” he told CBR. “We want the audience to not only feel what it’s like to be confined in such a destitute place. I want the audience to feel what he feels, so you’ll get — hopefully, if we’ve done our job correctly — you’ll get the grit. You’ll be sort of wanting to wash this prison off of you, it should feel so real.”

Oliver (Stephen Amell) will have to face some of the villains he put in jail, and it’s safe to say that the hero will see a few familiar faces. The CW has not confirmed which villains will be back in the fall episodes, but Bamford hinted that there might be some major nemeses behind bars.

“What I’ve said to the other folks is, ‘What if Batman got put in prison and, for instance, the Joker was right next door?’ The possibilities are endless,” he explained.

Bamford previously told Newsarama that “Arrow” Season 7 was especially violent. He and new showrunner Beth Schwartz had to figure out exactly what they are allowed to show on broadcast television.

“Beth and I had a phone call with BNSP, which is our censors... a very lengthy phone call about a particular scene that we never had before. So we are really trying to push the limits on the show in the gritty factor,” Bamford teased. “We are trying to go as far as you can go within the confines of our network and what is expected of us and what we can and can’t do.”

“Arrow” Season 7 premieres Monday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
