The 2022 autumnal equinox will take place on Sept. 22 and mark the first day of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

During the autumnal equinox, days become shorter since the sun rises later and nightfall arrives earlier. The word "equinox" is derived from the Latin word "aequus," which means "equal," and "nox," meaning "night."

The equinox occurs when the sun's center passes through the "celestial equator," an imaginary sphere on the same plane as the Earth's equator. When the equinox arrives, day and night are almost equal in length.
