A lot of mothers today go for pregnancy workout routines. Gone are the days when pregnancy means staying and bed and doing only a few to no exercise at all. Many celebrities like Khloe Kardashian, Serena Williams, Natalie Portman, Eva Longoria, and Emily Blunt went out of their way to do exercises and workouts during pregnancy.

In a report by South China Morning Post, mothers who stayed physically active while pregnant experienced less “pregnancy symptoms.” They suffered less backache, their postures improved, they had reduced bouts with constipation, and they even got to sleep well. They also attested to feeling stronger and with more endurance during pregnancy.

Neuromotor Skills

Several researchers from East Carolina University in the US studied 1-month-old babies and measured their neuromotor skills. According to the results of the research, the babies whose mothers exercised regularly during pregnancy exhibited a certain level of adeptness in movement. Those whose mothers didn’t get regular exercises fared lesser in terms of movement.

Their findings showed that pregnancy workouts or exercises benefited babies well. The babies had a lower risk of developing obesity. These great results were published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise journal.

Less Body Fat

The enhanced neuromotor skills in babies were not the only benefit. Another study, published in Obstetrics & Gynecology journal, stated that those women who carried on with exercises during the 3rd trimester gave birth to babies who had lesser body fat.

In another study from Kansan City University of Medicine and Biosciences, it stated that the cardiovascular health of fetuses was enhanced when their mothers exercised during pregnancy. This did not benefit them short-term, but it continued to benefit them right after they were already born.

Some Precautions

It is important to note, however, that there is a difference between mothers who were already physically active before pregnancy as compared to those who were less active. While exercising benefited both moms and babies, it is still important to consult your doctor before starting any form of exercise.

If during exercise and you start suffering from pain and discomfort, better give it a halt and seek medical attention. The same goes if you start noticing vaginal bleeding and other similar symptoms.
