A mother in Canada was unable to escape from a burning unit but made sure her infant daughter was out of harm's way by breaking a window and handing the infant over to someone. The parent was later reunited with her baby after firefighters arrived and rescued her.

Tamara Harris was trapped inside a burning building with her 10-month-old daughter in Etobicoke on Wednesday morning. She began panicking as the smoke spread through the hallways while she was stuck in the second-floor apartment, according to CTV News.

Harris felt the only way to save her infant was by smashing a window and handing the child over to someone outside the building.

“I said okay. My baby is going is to suffocate. We are going to die in here so I punched in the window,” the mother said.

A neighbor from down below reached up and safely grabbed the infant through the broken window. Meanwhile, Harris remained inside the burning building. The mother said she sustained extensive cuts on her hand and wrists from breaking the window. Fortunately, she did not have to stay apart from her daughter for too long because firefighters eventually arrived at the scene and rescued her from the building.

The mother and child were both taken to the hospital and were reportedly in stable condition.

Harris said her daughter had a rough start as she was born with health issues that meant she needed to receive hospital treatment for the first weeks of her life. The mother is now grateful her daughter survived the ordeal of being trapped in a fire.

The building’s tenants said it was a frightening situation. Andre Johnson, one of the residents, said he ran towards the exit door and felt the smoke was really thick. Since firefighters hadn’t arrived yet, Johnson called out to his fellow residents and asked them to follow the sound of his voice.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire soon after arriving at the scene. Although the blaze was contained in the apartment unit where it started, the smoke had spread fast and filled the building, CityNews reported.

Two units suffered significant damage, firefighters said. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
