A man in Chicago was shot and killed in an attempt to save his niece from sexual assault by a man who had broken into their home.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Thursday. James Lewis, 66, was shot in the head and back and rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The niece was taken to Trinity Hospital and was reported in stable condition.

Police said the suspect broke into the Burnside neighborhood home through a bedroom window. After the shooting, he fled the scene prompting a short manhunt. He was found near the house and taken into custody for questioning.

As of Friday morning, police had not released his identity or filed formal charges.

Police said it was unclear if Lewis’ and his niece had been targeted or were random victims.
