A man in Utah stabbed his toddler daughter thinking another person was in bed with his wife.

The Provo Police Department received a call from a woman saying her 2-year-old daughter had been stabbed and that she was rushing the toddler to the hospital. The incident took place around 3.30 a.m. local time (5.30 a.m. EDT) Wednesday,

Provo Police Sgt. Nisha King said the child was stabbed in the foot and her injuries were non-life-threatening, NBC-affiliated television station KSL reported.

"It was reported that a male had stabbed a bed and a child in the bed was injured. The child and mother were driving to the Provo emergency room," the probable cause statement said.

Investigation revealed the toddler’s father, identified as 34-year-old Miguel Rodriguez-Vega, had been drinking the whole night. He entered his wife’s room and began quarreling with her.

The man then noticed pillows and blankets stacked up beside her on the bed. He went to the living room and came back with a knife. Assuming that another person was sleeping beside his wife, Rodriguez-Vega pulled out the weapon and stabbed the sheets. The toddler, who was underneath the sheets, suffered injuries, King said.

"Miguel then came back into the room pulled a pocketknife from his pocket opened it and stabbed it down into the bed. When Miguel stabbed into the bed her daughter cried out and began to cry more. The mother pulled her daughter closer to her and saw her foot bleeding," the statement added.

The accused was taken into custody and faces several charges, including child abuse causing serious injury, domestic violence in the presence of a child, criminal mischief and intoxication. He is currently being held in the Utah County Jail. Details regarding his bail were not known.

Meanwhile, the toddler was discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for the injuries.

She then went into the kitchen, picked up a knife, and stabbed the unidentified husband multiple times in the back. She was taken into custody and charged with domestic aggravated assault and her bail was set at $10,000. Meanwhile, the husband underwent emergency surgery and was expected to make a full recovery.
