The decomposed body of a newborn baby was found dumped Saturday in some bushes near a public toilet in the northern Indian state of Punjab.

A passer-by had spotted the naked body of the newborn in the bushes outside the toilet near Lakkar Bridge in the city of Ludhiana on Saturday morning, The Hindustan Times reported. The unidentified man immediately informed the police, following which the dead body of the newborn was retrieved from the bushes.

“The body seems to be around three days old. The umbilical cord was still attached to the body. No injury mark was visible, apart from insect bites,” sub-inspector Harjit Singh told The Hindustan Times.

Singh said his team was checking the nearby CCTV cameras for clues on who dumped the baby in the bushes. It remains unclear if the baby was alive at the time of being abandoned.

An investigation is currently underway into the incident, and the police are waiting for the autopsy report to determine the cause of death. Authorities believe the mother of the child may have given birth at the scene and dumped the baby, Jagran.com reported [Google Translate showed].

So far, the police have found no clues about the whereabouts of the child's parents, and no arrests have been made. However, a case has been registered by the police against an unidentified woman. The details of the case were not revealed.

Earlier this month, a young mother was arrested after she threw her daughter out the toilet window of her flat right after giving birth. Authorities said the baby girl was found unresponsive on a ventilation duct in the western state of Maharashtra. Investigators found the teenager hid her pregnancy from her parents by wearing loose clothes. After giving birth to the baby inside the toilet, she threw the child out of the window. The baby died after suffering from severe head and shoulder injuries. The girl's family said they were completely unaware about the pregnancy. The teenager had the child with her boyfriend. His involvement in the case was under investigation. The police did not identify the accused or her boyfriend.
