KEY POINTS

  • Fortress mode will seemingly feature the Cabal as ambient enemies
  • The Season 19 Iron Banner events will replace normal Quick Play while they are active
  • Two weapons and an armor set for each class will be part of this season's Iron Banner loot pool

There's something spicy brewing at Bungie's development floor that might shake up the foundations of the Crucible come 2023.

A new Iron Banner game mode called "Fortress" was teased in the most recent This Week at Bungie post, and it hinted at the possibility of a mixed game mode where "Destiny 2" players have to battle over objectives against both opposing Guardians and Cabal warriors from Empress Caiatl's warband.

In January, players will get to experience this new mode once the first week of "Destiny 2" Season 19's Iron Banner starts.

At first, Fortress seems similar to the classic Control mode that has been a mainstay in the Crucible ever since "Destiny" was released. However, Bungie confirmed that the Cabal will be involved here in one way or another and that players will have to wait until the mode goes live if they want to find out how it really works.

The image directly tied to this showed a Guardian fending off Cabal Scorpion turrets in the Fortress PvP map. A thin flag post can also be seen in the background behind the hail of bullets.

The Season 19 Iron Banner will also see the return of a couple of weapons, namely the Gunnora's Axe Slug Shotgun as well as the Dark Decider Auto Rifle. They'll be coming with new perks as well as the revamped Iron Banner Origin Trait.

According to the API, Dark Decider will roll with perks like Gutshot Straight and Offhand Strike. Meanwhile, Gunnora's Axe can drop with Slickdraw and Voltshot.

Lastly, this season's Iron Banner will bring back the Iron Companion armor sets for each of the three classes. These sets are widely accepted by the community as some of the best-looking Iron Banner gear from the first "Destiny," and players in the sequel will finally get to collect them all again for their endgame fashion needs.

Iron Banner will only run twice this season, and it will replace the standard Quick Play node whenever it's active, according to last week's devblog.

"Destiny 2's" story is currently ramping up for February, which will mark the arrival of the Witness and its fleet of Pyramids in the "Lightfall" expansion. Beat back the Darkness in the hidden city of Neomuna, or die trying.
