Two people in India were taken into custody after a video of a dog viciously attacking a 10-year-old boy went viral on the internet.

The incident took place in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Friday. The video shows the canine, believed to be a Rottweiler, attacking the child in the middle of a street. Two women can be seen trying to release the boy from the canine’s grip. After they fail, two men hit the dog with a stick and a bat in an attempt to save the child.

The animal eventually lets go of the boy and goes back to its owner’s home. All this while, the canine’s owner can be seen standing on the terrace of his house and doing nothing to save the child.

Police began investigating the incident after the clip went viral on social media. Two people, including the dog’s owner, were taken into custody Monday. Another accused is on the run.

"A pet dog mauled a child in Badalpur village. Police took cognizance of the viral video and filed a complaint. Three people were named in the complaint, out of which two of them were taken into custody and jailed. One person is on the run and police are working relentlessly to nab him," a police officer said.

The condition of the boy, bitten by the dog, was not known.

Earlier this month, a four-year-old girl was chased and mauled by a pack of stray dogs in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. CCTV footage of the incident showed five dogs viciously attacking the girl as she struggled to escape. A passerby was then seen pelting stones at the dogs to chase them away. The girl was rushed to a local hospital with severe injuries and was released following treatment.

In a 2018 report, the World Health Organization said that 1.5 million dog attack cases are reported in India every year. In the same year, 12 children were mauled to death by dogs in Uttar Pradesh.
