  • Don Cheadle jokingly said the best part of his marriage to Bridgid was the tax break
  • The "Iron Man 3" star said he was fortunate to be in a relationship with Bridgid
  • Cheadle noted he is close with his very grounded and un-Hollywood children

Don Cheadle got candid about his super intimate wedding with his wife, Bridgid Coulter Cheadle.

Cheadle recounted the most special day he had with his wife and their children — his wedding day — when he promoted his new Netflix movie "White House." The "Iron Man 3" star shared some details about the "small" celebration that happened at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It was just me and her and our kids and our dogs and the pastor in the backyard," Cheadle told People.

Cheadle, 58, and Bridgid, 54, share two children, Tai, 28, and Imani, 26.

When asked about the best part of being married, the Marvel star jokingly said, "The tax break."

"Our accountant proposed to us, really. It's like, 'You guys have to do this. Please do this,'" he added. Despite his quips, Cheadle added, "I'm fortunate to be in this relationship."

Bridgid and Cheadle had been together for 28 years before they tied the knot. In a previous interview with Entertainment Tonight in July 2021, he echoed the same tax joke while discussing his wedding.

"Our accountant proposed to both of us, and he showed us the numbers, and we said, yeah, we should probably do it," Cheadle said.

However, he also noted that the topic of marriage had been on their minds for a long time, and they had discussed it several times already.

"It came up a lot of time," he explained. "But every time, we were like, 'But we're already together?' [The accountant said], 'Yeah, but this is a better reason to be together.' Really, it's because our accountant proposed to us, I wish there were some big sweet romantic story, but the romance happened, you know, the first year."

He jokingly shared a piece of unsolicited advice to those who were planning to get married at the time.

"Wait 28 years before you get married. Do not rush into things. Be very careful!" he said before jokingly adding, "You've got to make sure. I wasn't sure. Now, I think I'm almost sure."

Cheadle first opened up about the wedding when he appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," and guest host Wanda Sykes mentioned about the text she received from him informing her that he got married.

"I was like, 'What the hell happened, man?'" she said while recalling her response, noting that it was less than enthusiastic. "I think I just text something back, like, 'Hey, if you're happy, I'm happy for you.' ... I was like, 'Cheadle went Hollywood.'"

Sykes explained that she never thought Cheadle and Bridgid were not yet married because they have been together for nearly three decades with two grown-up children. The "Black Monday" star said he understood her reaction.

"Yeah, I mean, that's understandable given that we've been together 28 years before we got married," Cheadle said. "I hold you blameless."

In his recent interview, Cheadle said he no longer calls their children "kids" and gushed about how proud he was of their achievements. Tai work in the camera crew on various TV shows and movies, and Imani is a development associate at Cheadle's production company, This Radicle Act.

"I'm very fortunate to be close with my 'adult-ren'—I don't even call [them] kids anymore," he said. "They're very grounded and un-Hollywood, and I'm glad about that."

"White Noise" streams on Netflix on Dec. 30.
