KEY POINTS

  • Joe Biden has made tens of million from writing books
  • He is considered one of the "poorest" members of Congress in the past
  • COVID-19 slashed $1 billion off Donald Trump's net worth in March

Joe Biden has won the election over Donald Trump. The margin of winning is closer than people would have imagined. However, when it comes to fortunes, the gap between the two is wider than the separation on the tally of the votes.

Biden has an estimated net worth of $9 million. His fortunes grew after his stint at the White House as former president Barack Obama’s vice president from 2009 to 2017, per Celebrity Net Worth.

Biden makes most of his money from speaking engagements, books and public appearances. He would call himself one of the poorest members of the Congress. During his time as VP of the U.S., his net worth was only around $1.5 million.

A report from Forbes revealed that Biden and his wife Jill had three sources of income from 1998 to 2019: salary as a senator, salary as a teacher and salary as an English professor. Also, they made a lot of money from authoring books. Joe signed a $10 million deal to write three books with his wife. He has written several books in the past, including “Promise Me, Dad” and “Promises To Keep,” among others.

The Bidens bought a $2.7 million vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in 2017. The soon-to-be-proclaimed winner of the U.S. election has four children: Hunter, Beau, Ashley. and Naomi Christina.

On the other hand, Trump’s wealth came from his businesses, especially in real estate. However, the pandemic had its effect on his fortunes and slashed about $1 billion off it in March.

Trump’s net worth is now around $2.5 billion, per Forbes. When he was elected as president of the U.S., the 74-year-old vowed not to take any salary. His children Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. held positions in his team and served as senior advisors.

There were allegations that his children benefited from deals to boost their own businesses. Ivanka Trump’s net worth is now around $375 million while her brother Donald Trump Jr. has an estimated fortune of $25 million.

Aside from apartments and hotels that Trump owns, he also has a long list of golf courses in his portfolio. When the pandemic hit, travel and sporting events were effectively paralyzed. The drop in his net worth was one of the effects of COVID-19. Despite the financial hit, Trump remains one of the wealthiest U.S. presidents ever.
