Mercedes Mason as Ofelia
“Fear the Walking Dead” star Dayton Callie revealed that Jeremiah “left” Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) “in the desert to die, or not die” after meeting her back in Season 2, episode 14. Peter Iovino/AMC

Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) has yet to appear in Season 3 of “Fear the Walking Dead.” But because she was last seen meeting Jeremiah (Dayton Callie) in Season 2, episode 14, a lot of viewers think that the Otto patriarch took her as captive. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Callie finally broke his silence about Ofelia’s whereabouts.

“I found her in the desert,” Callie told the news outlet. “Took her and had a brief conversation with her and left her in the desert to die, or not die. It’s up to her, whatever she is. So, I’m not holding her hostage or anything so people can rest assured of that, but whether someone else has her, that’s not my business. I kind of vetted her out in the desert and decided she’s better off in the desert than back at the camp.”

While Jeremiah isn’t holding Ofelia as prisoner, the synopsis for Season 3 released last February points out that Ofelia is in captivity and it will test her ability to survive and see if she can muster the savagery of her father Daniel (Rubén Blades).

Apparently, a promotional photo released last May reveals that Ofelia is with Walker (Michael Greyeyes) — a new character who made his debut appearance in last week’s Season 3, episode 5.

In the episode, Madison (Kim Dickens), Troy (Daniel Sharman) and his crew went out of the ranch to check on the outpost of Broke Jaw ranch and what happened to the group who went to investigate the helicopter crash site. When they got to the outpost, they found a pile of burning bodies, which unfortunately belonged to the Broke Jaw soldiers they were looking for. About a hundred yards from the bodies, they found Phil (Rocky McMurray), another Broke Jaw ranch resident, sitting and absently reciting the poem “Antigonish” as a crow literally picked at his brain. As Madison slid a knife into Phil’s brain to put him down, Walker appeared behind them.

Although Troy and Walker have known each other long before, there’s obviously a bad blood between the people at the ranch and Walker’s men. “Tell your people it’s time for justice,” Walker told Troy. “The land you’ve lived on needs to be returned. Abandon the ranch.”

If Ofelia is now working for Walker, then she’ll probably find herself facing off against her old acquaintances Madison (Kim Dickens), Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Nick (Frank Dillane) later in the season.

“Fear the Walking Dead” Season 3 airs every Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.
