The year may just be getting underway, but college costs are already stacking up for students. If you're in college — or you're planning to head there this fall — February is a good time to start saving.

You can earn some extra moolah this month by applying for scholarships. February may be short, but your opportunities are numerous. Here are 21 awards to check out:

Feb. 1: Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association — $1,000 — for New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Delaware high school seniors

Feb. 1: EngineerGirl Scholarship — up to $500 — for students in grades three to 12

Feb. 15: Evelyn Faye Spates Memorial Scholarship — varies — for students in Saginaw, Michigan

Feb. 15: Grieg Lodge Scholarship Fund — $2,000 — for students in certain counties in Oregon and Washington

Feb. 15: Pogorzelski-Yankee Memorial Scholarship — varies — for graduate and undergraduate students who play the organ

Feb. 20: ASMF “Sleep Recharges You” High School Video Contest — $1,000 — for high school students
