  • The next installment of "Final Fantasy 7 Remake" is still in the early planning stages
  • Co-directors Naoki Hamaguchi and Motomu Toriyama confirmed that "nothing is solid" yet for Episode 2
  • "Final Fantasy 7 Remake" was released last April 10 and has been a massive hit

“Final Fantasy 7 Remake” has been a huge hit since its release last April, so fans are understandably clamoring for the next installment of the game. Unfortunately, it might not be as close to being produced as people initially assumed.

In an interview with co-directors Naoki Hamaguchi and Motomu Toriyama, they confirmed that Episode 2 of the remake is still in the planning stage and “nothing is solid yet.”

“The Remake’s first installment was centered in Midgar, which was the section I was responsible for in the original game, so I know it like the back of my hand. However, the next installments will take place in areas that, to be honest, I’ve forgotten about, so I’ll have to rewatch gameplay to revisit them,” Toriyama explained when asked about the next chapter of the game.

It is worth noting that the interview was recorded last March 19, so it is possible that there has been progress in the planning of the next episode. However, considering how the coronavirus pandemic has forced game studios all over the world to shift to work-from-home setups, fans shouldn’t raise their hopes up.

As for Square Enix’s plans for the second part of the “FFVII Remake,” Hamaguchi and Toriyama noted that there are plenty of factors they have to consider. For one, as they aspire to allow players to “experience the vast world” of the game, they also risk sacrificing its story and narrative.

“Even though the first installment took place only in Midgar, it still had such a large volume of contents, and I’m a bit apprehensive on how we will create the next installment’s large world. We were able to polish a Midgar using the latest technology, and who knows, I feel like in the next installment, we might use a completely different technique in creating the world of FFVII,” Toriyama shared.

After the huge success of “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” that saw it sell over 3.5 million copies in the first three days of its release, Square Enix is undoubtedly more motivated than ever to produce its second installment. However, fans will also have to understand that games take years to develop, especially for ones like “Final Fantasy” that covers a big world.

For now, fans have to be satisfied with the fact that there’s more to come after the “FFVII Remake.”
