Dr. Anthony Fauci suggested Fox News host Jesse Watters should be fired for making violent comments directed at the nation’s top infectious disease expert at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest conference on Monday.

Watters encouraged the event’s attendees to “ambush” Fauci with questions about the National Institutes of Health's “gain-of-function” research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

“Now you go in for the kill shot. The kill shot? With an ambush? Deadly. Because he doesn’t see it coming,” Watters said.

Gain-of-function research involves genetically altering organisms in a way that may enhance the biological functions of gene products.

Fauci said under oath in October: “The NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”

Fauci condemned Watters’ remarks as “horrible” in an interview Tuesday with CNN. Fauci said the only thing he’s done during the pandemic is encourage people to get vaccinated, to be careful in public settings and wear a mask.

“And for that, you have some guy out there saying that people should be giving me a kill shot to ambush me? I mean, what kind of craziness is there in society these days?” Fauci added.

Fox News has not indicated if it will take disciplinary action against Watters.

Fauci has previously criticized the network after another Fox host compared him to infamous Nazi doctor Joseph Mengele and that the lack of repercussions from the network was “astounding.”
