Aspiring YouTuber Gabby Petito is still missing after last speaking with her family on Aug. 25. Now the 22-year-old’s mother, Nicole Schmidt, has revealed her daughter’s boyfriend and former fiancé, Brian Laundrie, won’t speak to her.

Talking to The Daily Mail, Schmidt said she could not get a reply from Brian or his mother, Roberta Laundrie, while trying to first learn of Petito’s whereabouts.

“I texted Brian's mom that I was trying to get in touch with Gabby. I also texted Brian. I got no replies,” Schmidt said. “I knew something was wrong. I felt something was off and I needed to get her reported missing immediately.”

Schmidt soon after filed a police report in Petito's home state of New York. The outlet reports that outside of Brian’s sister Cassie, he and his family have not cooperated with the authorities.

“It's a very mysterious situation. We don't understand why he's doing this,” Schmidt added. “Everybody's assuming the worst and thinking he's guilty of this. But I don't want to believe that. I want to believe she's just in need of help out there and that everybody needs to keep searching.”

Prior to Petito's disappearance, she had been traveling across the country and living out of the van with Brian starting in early July. The couple documented their trip on social media and on Petito’s newly-started YouTube channel Nomadic Statik.

The channel’s one video featuring their journey currently sits at just over 446,000 views. The comments are flooded with conspiracy theories about Petito’s disappearance.

Petito was last seen in Salt Lake City on Aug. 24. She made contact with her family the following day and revealed she was in Wyoming. That same day she posted a photo from one of their stops to Instagram.

Over the next several days, Schmidt said she received “weird” texts from her daughter and is unsure if she was actually speaking with her at the time.

According to a statement from the family, Brian then left Petito to drive their van to Florida and has not explained to the family why he chose to do so.

On Tuesday, Brian released a statement via his attorney explaining why he has decided not to speak out.

"On the advice of counsel, the Laundrie family is remaining in the background at this juncture and will have no further comment," reads the statement, as reported by ABC News. "On behalf of the Laundrie family, it is our hope that the search for Miss Petito is successful and that Miss Petito is re-united with her family."

Previously engaged, Schmidt said her daughter and Brian decided to call off their engagement in favor of returning to dating because felt they were too young to wed. They first met while attending high school in Long Island, New York.

“Maybe the relationship wasn't what I thought,” Schmidt said.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on Petito’s disappearance to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
