What You Should Know Before Gotham Returns
Bullock (Donal Logue) and Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) will have their hands full with new villains when “Gotham” Season 2 comes back. Fox

Bundle up, because there will be plenty of chills and thrills when “Gotham” Season 2 returns on Monday, Feb. 29. Mr. Freeze (Nathan Darrow) will make his debut, while Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) will have to deal with the events that went down in the fall finale.

There are 11 episodes remaining this season with a lot of story left to tell. Gordon and the GCPD are going to have their hands full, while a young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) continues to take steps towards becoming the Dark Knight. Here are seven things you should know about the second half of “Gotham” Season 2 before the show returns.

1. New Villains

In episode 12, the arrival of villains Mr. Freeze and Dr. Hugo Strange (BD Wong) will change the dynamics of bad guys in the city. Mr. Freeze will have a personal reason for going around freezing people, but Strange is the real catalyst to keep an eye on. Strange overlooks the Indian Hill facility where unusual experiments are done to people. Firefly (Michelle Veintimilla) and the body of Theo Galavan (James Frain) have been taken there. Expect Strange to be the mastermind behind some strong villains down the road.

2. Fish Mooney Returns

According to TVLine, Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) will be back for multiple episodes in the second half of the Season 2. In the Season 1 finale it looked like Fish was a goner after Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) pushed her off a cliff to take control of the Gotham City underworld. Fish will be back for revenge and Penguin will be number one on her hit list.

3. Bruce Wayne To Continue Journey Towards Becoming Batman

In an interview with ComicBook.com, executive producer John Stephens teased that Bruce (David Mazouz) is going to continue to come of age in Season 2. He said the character will get knocked down but will continue to get back up again.

“It’s going to be a step forward, a step back, peaks and valleys. I think you’ll see Bruce make big steps towards becoming that person who’s going to be Batman this season, and then have failures and setbacks that sort of reorganize his life and readjust his priorities,” Stephens dished.

4. Theo Galavan Could Be Back

Although Theo may have been “killed,” it appears as though he'll be back this season. TVLine reported that Batman villain Azrael will arrive at some point this year, and the hero is brought about by the Order of St. Dumas. Moviepilot has pictures on their site of Frain on set in a costume that appears to be the armor of Azrael. Looks like Theo will be resurrected and stronger than ever before.

5. A Darker Jim Gordon

Jim Gordon's life as a police officer is going to be forever changed after he shot and killed Theo. McKenzie told TV Guide that the officer will have to deal with what happened “literally and psychologically.” Gordon crossed the line he never thought he'd cross when he shot Theo. He did this at a time when he's expected to become a father with Lee (Morena Baccarin).

6. Penguin Will Become More Evil

Penguin will take the fall for Theo's murder, and he'll earn a trip to Arkham Asylum. Inside, Penguin will encounter Strange, who will have some special plans for Penguin. In a behind-the-scenes video, Taylor said Penguin losing his mother could also be the final step in his becoming the “monster that everybody has always viewed him as.”

7. Barbara Will Wake Up

While the fall finale may have suggested that Gordon and Lee could finally just focus on each other and their future baby, Gordon's ex-fiancé, Barbara (Erin Richards), might not be out of the picture yet. Barbara is in a coma after she fell out of a window in episode 8. Richards revealed to ComicBook.com that she'll wake up and be “a little different.” It's unclear if she changed or remains just as crazy.

“Gotham” Season 2 returns Monday, Feb. 29, on Fox at 8 p.m. EST.
