KEY POINTS

  • Exclusive content and several improvements have been announced by Rockstar Games for the next-gen and PC version of "Grand Theft Auto Online"
  • Aside from introducing the Diamond Casino, other recent updates from Rockstar Games has tended to be small items, vehicles, and challenges
  • A bigger update this summer will bring unspecified new content, but another one later this year sounds even more promising

“Grand Theft Auto Online” is going to get exclusive content for its upcoming releases on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, as well as the existing version on the PC.

The version of Rockstar Games’ still popular multiplayer sandbox that is coming to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 promises to bring several improvements to “Grand Theft Auto Online,” with perhaps faster loading times being the most requested by the title’s many fans.

It’s been nearly seven years since “Grand Theft Auto Online” was launched and yet patches and content updates are still being delivered by Rockstar Games in support of it, notes ScreenRant. A recent one of those infrequent content updates introduced the Diamond Casino to the game.

The more recurrent updates, however, tend to be items, vehicles, or new challenges and bonuses for players to avail of. They may be on the smaller side, but franchise fans remain hopeful that things would indeed improve.

The good news is, Rockstar Games seems to have finally heeded the pleading of the fans. A bigger update this summer will bring unspecified new content, but another one later this year sounds even more promising. This promises to be the biggest game update for 2020 as a whole new location to the game has been hinted at.

Still, the biggest news for “Grand Theft Auto Online” remains the game’s arrival on the next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony. Both next-gen consoles are getting standalone versions of “Grand Theft Auto Online” as well as “Grand Theft Auto 5” in 2021.

During a recent earnings call, Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive revealed even more plans for the game, with the next-gen and PC releases of “Grand Theft Auto Online” getting exclusive new content. Although no specifics were given, they will be on top of the performance and visual enhancements that are already expected.

New content or not, however, one of the major sources of appeal from “Grand Theft Auto Online” comes from the interaction between players. Due to the previously mentioned infrequent updates that last seemingly forever, it is often left to the players to find their own sources of fun.

They’ve become quite adept at it, too, with players performing daredevil stunts in fighter jets and on foot and coming up with community-driven challenges and events like the game’s alien invasion earlier this year.

Admittedly, neither “Grand Theft Auto 5” nor “Grand Theft Auto Online” are the big draws for new console owners these days. Thus, it’s becoming all the more interesting that they’ve been promised new content even after all these years.

ScreenRant points out that it’s an ingenious way of keeping longtime players in the game’s ecosystem, although it does raise the question of when “Grand Theft VI” will actually ever be released.
