There have been a lot of controversies surrounding the British royal family lately, but according to reports, Queen Elizabeth II has stuck by and supported her family through it all. As it turns out, this apparently isn't a new trait for the 93-year-old monarch.

In 1976, the Prime Minister at the time, Harold Wilson, resigned, however, according to Express, the timing of the resignation is highly significant as it was used as a cover-up. Per the British publication, in 1982 the Daily Mirror used the book "The Pencourt File" to explain that Wilson's resignation was strategically dated to help the Queen with her sister, Princess Margaret, who's affair had just hit the tabloids.

"The matter of timing had been raised at Buckingham Palace," the book read. "When Sir Harold heard about the Royal Family’s domestic problems he had, according to Lady Falkender said: 'Well, Ma’am, do you think this would help?'"

"The Prime Minister had then offered to time his resignation announcement with the news that Princess Margaret’s 16-year marriage had ended, hoping to draw most of the resulting unwelcome publicity," "The Pencourt File" claimed.

Over 40 years later, Queen Elizabeth still seems to have maintained that same desire to protect her family. Amid her grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle's battle with the British tabloids, the monarch has extended her support both in public and behind closed doors.
