The Tampa Bay Lightning suspended Ian Cole, a famed defenseman in the National Hockey League (NHL), on Sunday after he was allegedly accused of sexually abusing a woman when she was a minor.

"Our organization takes these allegations very seriously," the hockey team said in a statement. "No members of the organization, including players, will comment further at this time," the team added, according to CNN.

Denying the allegation, Cole said he would cooperate with the investigation.

The sexual abuse allegations against Ian Cole resulted in an extensive investigation against the player, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told Associated Press. He further clarified that the league was unaware of the allegations until they surfaced on social media platforms.

The Tampa Bay Lightning player was accused of "emotional and sexual abuse."

An anonymous Twitter user alleged that Cole "pressured her into having sex multiple times," the outlet reported. Through the social media account, which was created last month, the user also claimed that Cole had already joined the National Hockey League when the incident happened.

In the post, the accuser also called on the league and other players to hold accountability for creating an environment of "misogynistic and predatory behavior."

33-year-old Cole went on to issue a statement on his social media, maintaining that the allegations against him are "unfounded."

"I look forward to clearing my name and demonstrating to the NHL and the Tampa Bay Lightning that these allegations are unfounded," Cole said. "I take the allegations made against me today in an anonymous tweet very seriously."

Ian Cole signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning worth $3 million in July, according to a NHL press release. His contract with the team also included a signing bonus worth $500,000.

Ian Cole's net worth is estimated to be $4 million, according to Celebseek.

Ian Cole started playing hockey professionally at the end of the 2009-2010 season. He has been associated with teams like St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets, Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild, and Carolina Hurricanes, with most recently being the Tampa Bay Lightning.
