Jane and Michael
Jane and Michael's dreams of living a long and happy life together were put to a screeching halt in Chapter Fifty-Four. The CW

Death is not something fans would normally associate with the show “Jane the Virgin,” but in Chapter Fifty-Four, the show decided to kill off one of its most beloved characters.

Team Michael (Brett Dier) fans thought their hero cop dodged a bullet when Season 3 opened, since he managed to survive the attack during his wedding night. But the narrator had already foreshadowed Michael’s untimely death in Season 1 when he said Michael will never stop loving Jane. “For as long as Michael lived, until he drew his very last breath, he never did,” the narrator said.

The show let Michael and Jane get married first, settle into their new home and have sex. They let the couple enjoy domestic bliss and even excitedly anticipate the thought of having a new baby. But this happiness was not meant to last.

In Chapter Fifty-Four, Michael suddenly dies after taking the LSATs. The narrator confirms what he said in Season 1 about Michael’s last breath while the image of his heart disappears.

Then came the painful call. Jane is at home with Mateo when someone tells her, “Your husband’s death was ultimately the result of his gunshot wound. His blood pressure spiked.” She drops the phone and lets out a gut-wrenching scream. Rafael, who was just entering the house, rushes to console her.

It was a painful episode for fans to watch, and even the show's stars feel the same way. Justin Baldoni, who plays Michael's rival Rafael Solano, shared two posts on his social media page expressing his heartbreak over Michael’s exit. Even though he plays Rafael, Baldoni said he will forever belong to Team Michael.

As for Jaime Camil, who plays Michael’s father-in-law Rogelio de la Vega, he shared the cast's group photo and simply told Dier: “We adore you.”

Meanwhile, Dier's work wife Rodriguez posted a photo and video featuring Dier's last few days on the set. She even called him “my partner in artistic crime.”

In the video, Dier talked to Jane as Michael and told her that he is excited to spend the rest of his life with her. Given the circumstances, it was a painful video to watch.

Yael Grobglas, who plays Petra Solano, also had a few touching words for her co-star.

The same goes for Andrea Navedo, who plays Xo Villanueva.

Of course, Dier also had a few words of his own regarding Michael's departure from the show.

“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 airs every Monday at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
