Kate Middleton was only in Prince William’s life for a short while when she reportedly “persuaded” him to make a big decision in regards to his future.

Last October, Express revealed that the Duchess of Cambridge influenced her future husband to stay in school after meeting there in 2001. According to the outlet’s findings, the royal wanted to drop out of attending the University of St Andrews after one term.

“He confided to [his father] Prince Charles about his utter misery when he returned...for the Christmas holidays... The Prince, who was 19 at the time, was relieved to be back home and decided that St Andrews, where he had been surprised by his heavy workload, was not for him. He felt it was too far from his father, his younger brother Harry and the close friends that he had made during his five years at Eton College,” The Telegraph reported in 2003.

Royal aides called the potential move a “personal disaster,” but Prince Charles helped his eldest son devise a withdrawal “strategy” from the school. And while the Prince of Wales may have been supportive of William leaving the university, Kate reportedly wasn’t fond of the idea of the future king leaving the school she also attended.

“Kate, at the time, counselled William with changing his course – she encouraged him not to leave and go back down to London but to stick with it and do something a little bit different,” former editor Camilla Tominey said in the documentary “Kate Middleton: Working Class to Windsor,” as reported by Express.

While Kate is credited by the publication for keeping the future king of England in school, The Telegraph noted that Charles also had a hand in his son’s decision. The father and son are said to have had a “heart-to-heart” about the matter in January 2002, resulting in William deciding to continue his education in Scotland.

William had enrolled at St Andrews to earn a degree in art history. Tominey said that William later traded his major for geography and went on to earn a second class honors degree. Kate earned a degree in art history.
