London Hughes is about to make her stateside debut in a single-camera comedy for NBC. The British comedian will be teaming up with “Insecure” co-creator Larry Wilmore on the upcoming sitcom, which is based on Hughes’ experience in America as an English woman.

According to Deadline, the series was written by both Hughes and Wilmore, the comedian will portray London Jones in the project, a woman who moves to the United States after her boyfriend dumps her with the hopes of potentially finding both love and success as a result. The pair will also be producing the project under the brand Wilmore Films along with Universal Television as a studio partner.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be working with such an exciting fresh voice as London Hughes in her dream come true,” Wilmore said in a statement. “Rarely does a star burst on the scene as instantly bright as she has, and partnering with Universal Television and NBC makes this truly a dream team.”

Hughes also released a statement talking about getting to work with Wilmore on her first TV series in the U.S.

“This show is honestly something I’ve wanted since I was 8 years old, and I can’t believe I get to make it for NBC with the absolute legend that is Larry Wilmore! Excited is an understatement! I’m this close to peeing myself,” she said.

The British comedian is known in the UK for her work in kids programming as well as the BBC/Amazon’s awarding-winning series “Fleabag” with Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She also runs a YouTube web series “No Filter” and a Spotify podcast called “London, Actually.” In early 2019, she became the first black British woman in 39 years to be nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy Award for her show “To Catch a D*ck” and is a winner of the U.K.’s Funny Women Award.

The untitled comedy will be Wilmore’s second time working with a female comedian to co-create a show. He previously partnered with Issa Rae for her HBO comedy series “Insecure”, which has won praise from critics and audiences. Wilmore has also hosted his podcast “Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air”. He was a host on Comedy Central’s “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” back in 2015.
