  • "The Last of Us Part II" has no updates on its multiplayer mode
  • Creative director Neil Druckmann teased that multiplayer mode will be worth the wait
  • 2013's "The Last of Us" featured a multiplayer mode called "Factions"

Amid the anticipation for the multiplayer mode for “The Last of Us Part II,” there has been no update yet, but one of Naughty Dog’s top executives is preaching patience.

During the annual celebration for everything related to “The Last of Us,” dubbed “The Last of Us Day,” Sunday, developer Naughty Dog revealed items pertaining to the title, including a new dynamic theme for the PlayStation 4, merchandise and a new board game.

However, for players expecting details on the multiplayer mode for “The Last of Us Part II,” Digital Trends reported that they went home empty-handed.

To appease fans, Naughty Dog vice-president Neil Druckmann sent out a tweet suggesting that the multiplayer mode will be worth the wait.

As the creative director and lead co-writer for “The Last of Us Part II” who was also involved in the first game from 2013, Druckmann’s voice holds sway in all things pertaining to the series yet it does little to comfort fans of the game.

Since its June release set records as the fast-selling first-party PlayStation 4 exclusive game ever, the game has been one of the huge success stories of the year despite the global pandemic. In fact, the “The Last of Us Part II” sold 4 million copies in its first three days after launch and became the third highest-selling PlayStation game in August.

So huge was "The Last of Us Part II" that even Sony competitor Phil Spencer of Xbox praised the team behind it.

However, it has sparked some controversy due to the game’s themes and the story surrounding lead character Ellie and the choices she makes. This had resulted in review bombing in some quarters, which prompted Metacritic itself to change user score submissions to prevent this from happening once again.

As players finished the game’s story, anticipation began to grow for this sequel’s equivalent to the first “The Last of Us” game’s Factions or multiplayer mode. Yet Naughty Dog had already stated that no online mode would be coming upon the release of “The Last of Us Part II.”

Perhaps to manage expectations, Naughty Dog added the Grounded difficulty and Permadeath settings in August but still no multiplayer mode.
