Liberal leader Tony Abbott pitches his $3.1 billion health and hospital package to Sydney voters on Thursday hoping that 2,000 new public hospital beds and extended late-night GP services will sway them to their side before the Aug. 21 elections.

Under the package, 800 more beds pledged by the Coalition will be for mental health. The offer is 1,500 more beds than the Labor's counterpart package plus more community control over public hospitals.

For the GP package, $365 million in Medicare incentives will be extended to doctors who provide extra hours of care, including $250,000 in grant for 24-hour surgery services.

The funding for after-hours GP services is the Liberals' answer to the exclusion of GP super clinics in its promised health policy.

In contrast, Labor is focusing on expanding the super clinics network.
