  • Mads Mikkelsen should pick a side between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, according to Andy Signore
  • Some netizens accused Mikkelsen of taking Heard's side by being neutral
  • Several online users also understood Mikkelsen’s stand

Mads Mikkelsen is facing another round of criticisms when he broke his silence after taking over Johnny Depp's role in the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise.

Mikkelsen will be officially replacing Depp as dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the "Fantastic Beasts" movies. Warner Bros. asked Depp to resign after he lost his libel case against The Sun. Mikkelsen said the role would be tricky and choosing him as the replacement was a shocker. But the netizens were not very happy with his interview with Entertainment Weekly because for them, he was playing safe.

Andy Signore called out Mikkelsen in an episode of "Popcorned Planet" after his interview because many were upset when "The Hunt" actor said he wished them, presumably Depp and Amber Heard, the best. One netizen assumed he was siding with Heard, whom the online user said was "Depp's abuser" in Signore's screenshot.

"He's playing it safe," Signore said.

"He's doing what typical Hollywood PR people do. They play it safe, they do not have any genuine balls or loyalty. They just want to work and they want to stay at a drama and they got to say something and so he's playing it safe on both sides. He's not taking a side. And in this instance, I think it's important to take a side."

Signore went on and cited Heard's leaked recording where she admitted to hitting Depp. He also said that Mikkelsen could have reached out to Depp's team before he spoke about taking over the role. Several agreed with Signore that Mikkelsen should have made it clear which side he is siding with and support it all the way.

"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. Of course we'd expect people to side the truth, but sadly the world doesn't work that way," one commented.

"Agree 100% with you, pick a side or zip it," another wrote.

Meanwhile, many also understood Mikkelsen's point of view. One said, Hollywood isn't so simple and one can't just pick sides especially if their career depends on it. Another said taking the role is just another project for Mikkelsen and he is not obligated to pick a side or reach out to Depp.

"Mads Mikkelsen gave a great neutral and political answer, and should not be obligated to choose any side. He is also not obligated to reach out to Johnny Depp. This is simply another job for Mikkelsen, what happened to Depp is not his business and can choose if he wants to involve himself in it or not. Honestly, even with knowing the information I would have done the same thing Mikkelsen did, so I don't involve myself in drama," one netizen said.

Mikkelsen received intense backlash from Depp’s supporters earlier when he accepted the project. Many of them pointed out that Depp was a domestic violence victim and he was wrongfully fired from the project, so by accepting the offer he was not supporting his fellow actor.
