A man was arrested after he shot his parents inside their home in New York on Christmas morning, authorities said Sunday.

Dino Tomassetti, 29, was accused of shooting his 64-year-old mother in the head and his 65-year-old father in the back while the elderly couple was at their Long Island home, The Daily Voice reported, citing Nassau County authorities.

The victims, identified as Rocco and Vincenza Tomassetti, had to undergo surgery for their bullet injuries. Law enforcement sources told The Daily Voice that the father's condition was serious. However, both the victims have survived.

Authorities found the couple with gunshot wounds when they reached the home after receiving a distress call on Christmas Day. The suspect was described as a "5-foot-9-inch, 235-pound man who could deadlift 725 pounds." Police also broadcasted the license plate number of the man on the radio.

Dino was arrested by state troopers while he was driving in Mahwah Township, New Jersey, New York Daily News reported. The troopers then alerted the Mahwah Police Department, which closed New Jersey's southbound Route 17. Dino was driving a Cadillac Escalade.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Dino will be held in the Bergen County lockup pending extradition proceedings. The intensity of his charges will depend on the condition of his parents.

The couple holds joint ownership of the Long Island mansion, which is currently valued at $3.2 million, according to New York Post. Dino works as a personal trainer, while his father owns the Brooklyn-based company Empire Transit Mix.

People living near the couple's home were shocked by the violence.

"Kind of crazy, because this is a very quiet neighborhood, kind of like a safe neighborhood," Ariella Bronfman, a neighbor, told New York Daily News.
