A man was arrested Wednesday evening for fatally stabbing his roommate in front of the victim’s eight-year-old son. The incident took place in San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday.

The San Antonio police department arrested 66-year-old Gerald Allen Young for a murder charge even after he claimed that he stabbed his roommate, 56-year-old Steven David Anderson, to defend himself.

According to police Chief William McManus, the fight broke out between the two at around 12.30 p.m. local time (1.30 p.m. EDT) and escalated rapidly. The official statement suggested that the eight-year-old ran into the neighbor’s house and informed them that his father was stabbed in the neck. The police arrived and found Anderson’s body inside the residence in a pool of blood with a stab mark on the left side of his neck. Young had bleeding in the facial areas as well as a few visible wounds.

Police interviewed the victim’s son who told them he saw his father backing down but then Young picked up a knife from the kitchen and attacked the former with it. The investigators also made a note of the 911 call that Young had made moments before the phone call by neighbors, claiming that his roommate was sending him threats and that he called him a “worthless piece of flesh”.

Young was advised to stay at the hospital after the treatment to normalize his blood alcohol level. He refrained from providing a statement without legal representation. He was released on a $75,000 bail.
