Rumors spread over social media on Thursday about a film return for Marvel superhero Captain America. Actor Chris Evans, who played Captain America in seven films, took to Twitter later in the day to dispel the notion.

"News to me," Evans posted on Twitter to his 14.3 million followers.

Captain America last appeared in "Avengers: Endgame," a film that grossed nearly $2.8 billion.

A comeback for a Marvel superhero has happened before. Robert Downey Jr. had finished the “Iron Man” franchise but was featured in “Captain America: Civil War” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming."

Evans confirming there was no word of a Captain America comeback prompted disappointment on social media.

Captain America was involved in a final fight with Thanos in “Avengers: End Game.” He traveled back in time to return all the Infinity Stones they collected and later decided to live a long and normal life with Peggy Carter.

Marvel has made no public comments about the status of Captain America.

Due to the pandemic, many big-budget films have not gone into production.
