Miley Cyrus promised that her single “Malibu” was a personal track and on Sunday night, the singer showed just how emotional the track was.

While performing at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards on ABC live at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Cyrus broke down in tears while performing the lead single from her upcoming album. “I never sat by the shore under the sun with my feet in the sand / But you brought me here and I'm happy that you did / 'Cause now I'm as free as birds catching the wind,” Miley sings on the song.

As Cyrus neared the end of the song, singing, “And I wanna thank you with all of my heart / It's a brand new start / A dream come true / In Malibu,” tears started rolling the singer’s face. With watery eyes, Miley thanked the crowd and got a standing ovation. “Thank you, guys. Thank you so much,” she told the crowd, even getting an applause from Nicki Minaj.

Making the moment even more special for Cyrus was that her younger sister Noah Cyrus and father Billy Ray Cyrus presented her before she performed. “"For the first time in years with pants on,” joked Noah before announcing her older sister as her father pumped his fist in the air.

Sporting a white top, white shorts, cowboy boots and a hat, Miley sported her new toned down look -- getting back to her country roots. While some may see it as a drastic change for the singer, her sister, Noah Cyrus, doesn’t see it that way.

Speaking with E! News on the red carpet before the show, Noah said, “I see new music, but I don’t really see a Miley change. Miley is always going to be Miley to me and I don’t see a new Miley [or] an old Miley.”

She added, “Some people do and I get really confused when people say that. I don’t know. I just see her as my sister and the person I’ve loved since I was a baby. She’s my sister and she doesn’t change to me. Whatever makes her happy is what I want.”

During an interview with Billboard earlier this month, Cyrus spoke about the song, saying it would put the power back in her relationship. After Billboard told her some people might call the song “sentimental,” Miley responded, “They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam [Hemsworth]. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel?’”

While Cyrus agreed that her new album was pretty “singer-songwriter-y,” she wouldn’t call it “granola.” The singer said, “I don’t listen to Ed Sheeran and John Mayer and stuff. ”
