A woman has been robbed in India shortly after selling her newborn son for $3,300.

The woman, identified as 28-year-old Yasmin, had a 10-year-old girl when she became pregnant with another child this year. When her husband left her during the second pregnancy, the woman decided to undergo an abortion as she was facing a financial crisis.

It was then that she met Jayageetha, who told convinced her to sell the baby for a handsome sum of money after birth, according to India Today.

Yasmin agreed and as per the plan, she gave birth to the child at a hospital in the southern state of Tamil Nadu on Nov. 21. After getting discharged from the hospital, she met Jayageetha, who then introduced her to a woman named Dhanam and an unidentified couple.

Yasmin handed over the baby to Dhanam and collected the agreed amount in an envelope after signing a blank paper, which she was told was a "bond." But when she took an auto-rickshaw with her elder daughter just minutes after the deal, two men on a motorcycle started following her, reported Times of India.

"Yasmin later booked an autorickshaw through an app and boarded it with her elder daughter and the cash. However, a few meters down the road, a bike-borne duo stopped the autorickshaw and spoke to the driver on the pretext of seeking directions for an address. Suddenly, the duo snatched the envelope from Yasmin and fled the spot," a police officer said as per DT Next.

The woman went to a nearby police station and filed a complaint. She was suspecting that the woman she had just talked to was the one behind the robbery.

Police have launched a hunt for Jayageetha, Dhanam, the couple and the two men on the motorcycle.

"Only after securing them, will it be known if the snatcher duo belongs to the same gang," a police officer told the outlet.

No arrests were made as of Sunday evening. It remains unclear if Yasmin will be charged in connection with the incident.
