A 22-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly crashing her car on purpose to stop people from taking her injured child to a hospital in Texarkana, Texas.

Police believe the child’s injuries were the result of previous abuse.

Officers from the Texarkana Texas Police Department were informed Monday at around 8 a.m. about a major crash that took place at the Town North Apartments on Elizabeth Street. Cops arrived at the scene and discovered that the crash was intentionally caused by a young mother identified as Charquevya Kirkendall.

“When the officers arrived, they discovered that the crash was not an accident at all,” police said, according to KWTX.

Officers at the scene spoke to the occupants of one of the vehicles involved in the crash. They said they noticed Kirkendall’s 5-month-old boy was injured and decided to take him to the hospital. However, the occupants told cops that Kirkendall rammed her vehicle into their car when they tried to do so.

Police said Kirkendall "intentionally rammed their vehicle with her own car to try to keep them from leaving with her child." Cops also noted that the child’s injuries indicated physical abuse; the baby was rushed to a local hospital and received medical attention.

“The child had injuries that were apparently the result of previous abuse (not related to the crash) and was transported to Wadley Regional Medical Center,” Texarkana Texas Police Department said in their statement, which was posted on Facebook. “While serious, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.”

The occupant of the vehicle Kirkendall crashed into was taken to Christus St. Michael Hospital and released after their injuries were treated.

Kirkendall was arrested and “booked into the Bi-State Jail,” the police department said.

She was charged with injury to a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, KALB reported. Police said she is being held without bond. The investigation into the case continues.

“Detectives are still investigating this case and trying to figure out what all happened," police said. "If you have any information, please call us at 903-798-3116."
