KEY POINTS

  • Release dates of projects like "Mulan," "The New Mutants," and "Antlers" have been pushed back due to the coronavirus outbreak
  • No new release dates have been announced
  • "A Quiet Place: Part 2" and "F9" also pushed back their release dates

A few days ago, a report suggested that the global film industry is looking to bear losses worth $5 billion due to the coronavirus outbreak. In that particular report, some analysts also forecasted that the numbers could go higher if the movies are pushed back and the theaters remain closed due to the deadly disease.

And now it seems the losses are all set to go higher because three of this year’s biggest releases have been pushed back due to the threat posed by the life-threatening virus.

Films like “Mulan,” “The New Mutants,” and “Antlers” will now get new release dates amid the outbreak. “Mulan,” the live-action movie by Disney, was on-course to get a $90 million opening in the U.S. But the movie’s chances to get huge numbers were dented by the theaters closed in China.

Not just China, but more than eight countries such as India, Denmark, Norway, Italy, Poland, Lebanon, Kuwait, and Greece have closed their cinema halls to prevent the spread of the disease. India’s national capital, New Delhi, just announced coronavirus as an “epidemic” and closed every single theater present in the city.

The news of the film’s postponement was confirmed by director Niki Caro on Instagram. The filmmaker posted the poster of the movie and wrote that she is beyond excited to share the movie with the fans but with all that has been happening because of coronavirus, the makers have decided to postpone the “worldwide” release of the movie.

The “Zookeeper’s Wife” helmer concluded by saying that she is eagerly waiting for the day when people would get to witness the journey of an amazing warrior who became a legend.

The movie was originally slated to hit theaters on March 27.

On the other hand, the spin-off of the “X-Men” series, “The New Mutants,” has also been postponed. This is the fifth time that the film’s release date has been pushed back. The movie was initially scheduled to hit theaters in 2018, before being delayed to Feb. 2019, to avoid a clash with “Deadpool,” and then to Aug. 2019, to avoid “Dark Phoenix.”

“The New Mutants” was scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2020. The new release date has not been announced yet.

Another movie that faced the brunt of coronavirus is "Antlers." Produced by Guillermo Del Toro, the horror movie was touted as one of the most-anticipated movies of 2020.

In the last 24 hours, more than 5 movies have shifted their release dates because of the pandemic. The makers of “A Quiet Place: Part II” and “F9” have also decided to postpone the release of their respective movies.

Filmmaker John Krasinski announced on Twitter on Thursday that “due to ever-changing circumstances of what’s going on in the world around us,” a decision has been made to delay the “A Quiet Place” sequel's release. Its new release date is currently unknown.

Meanwhile, the ninth installment in the “Fast & Furious” franchise will now debut in U.S. theaters on April 2, 2021, nearly one whole year after its initial May 22, 2020 release date.
