A UFO that mysteriously appeared in Japan has baffled local agencies regarding its exact nature. Those who spotted the object speculated that it could either be an alien vessel or military equipment.

The UFO sighting began on June 17 when a spherical white object appeared over the city of Sendai, which is located in northeastern Japan. Some of the residents in the area took to Twitter to report what they saw while others contacted local authorities.

Based on the photos and videos of the object, it closely resembled a large spherical balloon. It also had a cross-shaped dangling below it. Due to its appearance, many people speculated that it would be a weather balloon or other meteorological instrument flown by a local agency operating in the area.

However, after confirming with local and national agencies, the Japan Meteorological Agency’s office in Sendai noted that the exact nature of the object still remains a mystery. The agency also stated that it is not yet clear who or what launched it.

“We checked with the Sendai municipal government and the Self-Defense Forces, but they have no idea either,” the agency stated, according to Kyodo News.

A spokesperson for a local weather bureau noted that although the object could be some type of weather monitoring instrument, they’re still not sure what it is.

“We have absolutely no idea what it is,” the spokesperson stated, according to Reuters. “It may be some kind of weather monitoring equipment, but it definitely isn’t ours.”

Following the appearance of the mysterious object, Twitter users have started sharing their own theories regarding its possible nature and origins. Although most people believe that the object is just a weather balloon, others believe that it could be an alien vessel hovering over the city.

Others stated that it could be a flying device that’s designed to spread COVID-19 in the area while others said it was probably launched by the North Korean military to drop propaganda leaflets.

According to local authorities, they are closely monitoring the object to see where it is heading and to make sure that it will not affect flight paths over the city.
