National Video Games Day is observed annually on Sept. 12 to encourage all video game lovers to enjoy a good gaming challenge. The day provides the opportunity to grab a gaming console and solve digital missions and complicated tasks. Just try not to press the joystick too hard.

Digital gaming is known to be one of the most engaging forms of entertainment. Video games have immense popularity among youngsters and older adults alike. This highly addictive form of entertainment transports people to a goal-oriented parallel universe where they get to enrich their thinking capabilities.

While the reputation of video games is marred by allegations that it drains a young mind out, analysts have backed them arguing that video games bolster tactical thinking which is a useful life skill.

The first-known video game was Bertie the Brain, an artificial intelligence designed to play Tic-Tac-Toe and installed on a 4-meter high machine built on vacuum tube technology. Invented in Toronto, the game was the first of its kind in 1950.

The game was, however, disassembled after the Canadian National Exhibition where it was on display and was never rebuilt. In the years that followed, video games underwent several modifications to become the modern versions that we know today.

As children, most of us remember playing with handheld gaming consoles. Games like Road Rash, Grand Theft Auto and Mario are some of the most popular games nearly every child has played. Growing up, we found ourselves upgrading to Playstation, Xbox and Gameboy.
