A New Hampshire woman has alleged someone stole her Christmas gifts worth thousands of dollars and replaced them with bags of dog food while she was returning home from a trip to Europe.

Gina Sheldon recently returned from a Paris trip, and was excited to open her new purchases for herself and her family. When she started unpacking the bags, Sheldon found her expensive gifts were missing.

"I opened the third bag which I had all the gifts in and things I bought for myself as well, and it was replaced with dog food, an old T-shirt, a shaving cream bottle," Sheldon said, WCVB reported.

The horrified woman said she lost around $3,000 worth of Christmas shopping.

"There was a leather jacket I had purchased for my 16-year-old. I had bought these cute leather wristlet band purses — I had 10 of those — that I was going to give to various friends and family members," she added.

The swap is believed to have occurred in the baggage area of Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport during Sheldon’s return flight. She booked her tickets through Delta Air Lines, but her flight to Boston was operated by Air France.

Sheldon said the burglars may have put the items in her bags to imitate regular luggage during scanning, which could have been why no one realized something was amiss.

"I think the reason they did that because when it goes through the scan as it continues on its journey it looks like a real luggage product," Sheldon said, the outlet reported.

Delta Air Lines apologized for the incident in a statement to media outlet KNTV.

"We apologize for this customer’s experience following Air France flight 334. We have affirmatively connected with our partners at Air France and the customer to find a resolution," the airlines said.

Sheldon said her gifts might have been lost, but she got a good story out of it. "I went to a friend's house for a holiday party and I had all these different gifts to give them, and instead I walked in with a bottle of champagne and a good story," she told KNTV.
