‘NSync fans who tuned in for “Saturday Night Live’s” 40th anniversary were slightly disappointed. While the special successfully brought back comedy legends to recreate famous sketches, the show failed to deliver the highly talked about ‘NSync reunion. The only catch? A reunion was never planned!

Rumors started circulating that the ‘90s boy band was getting back together after the band’s official Twitter account posted the following message:

Fans immediately assumed that the band would be performing, however group member Lance Bass took to the social media site to clear up any confusion. When a Twitter user asked if there would be a performance, Bass replied, “there will not be – but can’t wait to see this show!” He later added that while the group wouldn’t be “performing or doing a skit,” that viewers should “look hard for us in the audience.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, NBC simply confirmed that the group would be “attending the festivities.” The network did not hint at an on-screen reunion.

Of course this disappointed fans that tuned in for the “Saturday Night Live” 40th anniversary show – especially because cameras didn’t cut to the boy band on the red carpet or in the audience. On top of that, E Online reports that the full group – Bass, Justin Timberlake, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone and JC Chasez – wasn’t in attendance. Although Timberlake did take to the stage with Jimmy Fallon for the opening sketch, JC Chasez was allegedly absent from the event because his sister-in-law just gave birth.
